Provo River

Named by the Utes, Timpanogotzis ( Literal translation: Tempi- "Rock", Panogos- "Water mouth or canyon") or  what is now called the Provo River is the most popular river run in Utah County. I would suggest the meaning of Timpanogotzis is more like "Rocky River".  Anyone who has kayaked the Bridal Veil falls section of the Provo would totally get this.

Mount Timpanogos

Locals today associate the word Timpanogos with the nearby mountain, however that name was actually taken from the name of the river and reassigned to the mountain by early settlers who wanted to name the river after the first european recorded coming through the canyon, Etienne Provost, 1824. Therefore, we have the name "Provo River".
