On a hot covid-19 day in August the Provo River was so popular I could not get a ride from the equipment and tour rental companies to the Deer Creek dam put in. And, with all the river rental company's equipment and every other halfway navigable floatation device in the greater Utah area in the river, it was like a conveyor belt of bobbing noggins entering the river somewhat resembling a Stouffer's human lasagna making factory line. It sounds a little disparaging. However, I had a great time and It looked like everyone else did as well. Extra cheese on my lasagna please.
The great thing about a solo paddle on a day like this is that you are never alone and people on the river are happy to give, so said Tina Turner. There really is something about a river that makes it a happy place. Even when tubers are getting beat up by the shrubs and rocks they often come out laughing. Maybe they are just elated with survival. Whatever it is the river is for sure a joyous place.
As this season winds down and the river becomes a much more empty vessel, I will always miss the summer of covid-19; with prevaricating election strategies, maskers and anti-maskers, really bad civil leadership and the rise of the mobacrats. It is good to know that there is a magical place away from it all. It is hard not to love the Provo River.
Thankyou Provo River.
