Provo River: Deer Creek Dam to Vivian Park

Deer Creek Dam to Vivian Park is by far the most popular river run in the greater Provo area. There are several watercraft rental companies in competition for rentals in this area. In the hot summer months you can enjoy various social river runs with tubing, canoeing, rafting, sups and kayaking. Lots of friendly hellos while you cool yourself off in the clear water of the Provo river.

For the less experienced navigator there is portage around the "Train Bridge" where the Heber Creeper crosses the Provo River. If you do choose to go through their are some things to be aware of: There are submerged pylons lurking beneath the surface of door number 2. This slot looks like the safest passage on approach and indeed it is in higher water, however, in lower water situations the pylons could be problematic. Slot number three is typically a swift current approach however very manageable in low water situations. It might be wise to watch a few boats go through if you have never been through before.

Friends and family go through the "Cheese Grater" for the first time. My daughter was so proud to make it through.

Summer Time On the Provo

For a more peaceful journey you might enjoy this trip more in the spring, fall, or sometimes you can beat the crowd with first light in the summer months. Keep in mind that this river is a meca to many fly fisherman. They are always on the river. Be thoughtful and kind they are also enjoying the day.

Ad some fishing

How to get there:

The take out can be tricky. There are private companies with easy take out areas if you rent from them. If you have your own watercraft you will have to take out on the left side of your approach to the bridge at Vivian Park. You can park your vehicle at Vivian Park. There are some rocks just before the bridge that you will have to lift your kayak over. From there you can then carry your boat to the Vivian Park parking lot where your vehicle awaits you. If the river carries you past the rocks and under the bridge there is another place to exit the river just past the bridge.

Hwy 189 will take you right to Vivian Park. As you cross the bridge and enter the park there are two parking lots you can access. These fill up quickly in the summer months with picnickers, fishermen and rivers runners alike. I recommend getting there early to get an ideal parking spot.
