The Greek word "chrysops" translates to golden eye. I love the phrase from the animated movie "The Incredibles" that says, "If everyone is a super than no one is a super". Meaning, if there is many than it is not so great. Or, is it more like in heaven the streets are made of gold. So it is with the Golden Eye or White Bass (Morone Chrysops) and the Utah Lake prolific gold spawn.
Not the hybrid "wiper" (the best way to tell is the single medial tooth) and wipers are not released in Utah Lake.
If you are going by weight, then pound for pound the White bass is the best fighter around. The Utah State record for a white bass is 4lbs and 1oz. Can you imagine the fight you would get on a 4lbs white bass? I have been pretty close and in a kayak they do take you for a ride.
White bass will hang out in large schools so filling up the bed of your truck is not unheard of. If you run into a large school of these prepare to put your arm in a cast in more ways than one. It is a great fishing day. If you are on the east side of Utah Lake you can almost hear the angels singing as you catch fish after fish with the sun ducking behind the west mountains.
Have a great day of fishing.
